ANALOG PHOTOGRAPHY
July 10 - 14
A course for those who want to learn more about film-based (analogue) photography, regardless of whether it is a completely new interest or something you have been doing for some time. We work our way through the entire process; how film works, how to load the camera, basic methods of exposure - what is needed to make a picture, factors affecting exposure, developing the film and copying onto paper in the darkroom. This course covers black-and-white film and duplicating in the 135 format (standard small-screen film). Chemistry and papers are provided by the school. Bring your own camera and film. If you don't have access to a camera, there are a few available to borrow.
Arrangement:
Day 1: Short presentation by course leader and review of expectations and thoughts from participants. We go through how an analogue camera works, how film works and what can affect the final result and load the camera with black and white film. We end the day by starting to photograph.
Day 2: Photography. Overview of different film formats (spy camera to large format, and what distinguishes the different) Different types of film and cameras.
Day 3: Demonstration of loading developing boxes and developing. We develop the black and white film so that we produce a negative. Since the darkroom and film loading room are small, half the gang starts developing film today.
Day 4: Review of the darkroom and its processes. The rest of the participants develop film. Darkroom time for those who developed film yesterday.
Day 5: Darkroom work and final review of the results. Demonstration of some different alternative copying methods that may arouse curiosity. Questions and discussions.
